Ride along the Mekong back into town for the final stop of the day: the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, dedicated to exploring the rich diversity of Laos’ ethnic minorities.

DAY #3 - Luang Prabang, Laos Sofitel
Boat trip to Pak Ou Caves (25 km): 2 hours
After breakfast there will be a hotel pickup and transport to the pier to begin the Mekong River tour. Today, you will have a private cruiser boat from Mekong Kingdoms to take you upriver.
Beginning the cruise, observe the daily activities of fishermen and others living along the waters. For many, life along the river plays an integral role in daily life and usually represents the only means of transportation and commerce.
Two hours upstream from Luang Prabang, disembark to visit the famous Pak Ou Caves. Locally called Tam Ting, the caves are filled with thousands of gold-lacquered Buddha statues. The statues range in size from a few centimeters tall to the height of a human and are crammed into the cave which is nestled in a limestone cliff.
After visiting the caves, reboard the boat for a cruise back to Luang Prabang. En route, stop at Ban Xang Hay, a village which specializes in making traditional rice-wine. Enjoy an independent lunch in Luang Prabang.
In the late afternoon, take part in a privatized Lao cooking class run by one of Luang Prabang’s most famous restaurants, Tamarind. The expert chefs will demonstrate how to prepare authentic Lao dishes before giving guests a try. After the meals have been prepared, sit down and enjoy the day’s work. Upon completing the course, receive a cookbook in order to prepare some of the delicious meals back home.

DAY #4 - Luang Prabang, Laos Sofitel
Luang Prabang – Kuang Si 1 hour
For early risers, there is a very special dawn visit to watch the collecting alms by monks. As the sun begins to rise, long lines of orange-robed monks leave their pagodas and walk barefoot down the streets collecting offerings from Luang Prabang residents. It is a beautiful, serene ceremony that highlights the spiritualism of the Laos people.
After breakfast, depart with guide and driver for a short transfer through the Luang Prabang countryside to Kuang Si Waterfalls. Stop en-route to visit a small ethnic village, learning about their traditions and culture.
Upon reaching Kuang Si Waterfall, relax and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. The water collects into several cool, clear pools where it’s possible to take a refreshing swim.
On the road back, there is an optional visit to Free the Bears. This sanctuary houses 23 Asiatic bears, all which have been rescued from poachers. Additionally, a stop can be made at the unique Lao Buffalo Dairy Farm, a social enterprise that produces sustainable and delicious cheese while giving back to the community and environment. While the buffalo may be the stars here, there are also playful pigs, cheeky chickens and rollicking rabbits that are just as fun to interact with for the young and young at heart. Enjoy a homemade ice cream at the cafe before saying goodbye to the Buffaloes and the team. (Opening 9.30am – 5.30pm, Monday – Sunday)
Afterwards, stop for a picnic lunch near the falls before returning to Luang Prabang in the afternoon.
As the day comes to the end, there will be a unique opportunity to experience one of Laos’ oldest traditions, The Baci. The purpose of the Baci is to call back escaped spirits to the body, a ceremony generally held before major events such as weddings, births, travel and farewells. The Baci tonight will take place in the Temple of Wat That Luang, where both monks and nuns will attend the blessing.

Reviews

The trip itself was good. We got to see a lot of the sites of China. It was go, go go, which in itself is fine. However, I’m not a young person anymore, so it was exhausting. That said, I’m not sure I would want to change anything about it. Personally, I especially enjoyed the Great Wall. We were on a very quiet part and pretty much had the wall to ourselves most of the time! The one real issue we had was our tour leader. She was in a word, offensive. She did not listen to us, was not helpful and was downright insulting. She got lost several times and had no idea how to plan things. We missed out on a few things because she didn’t know what was possible. For example, we wanted to bike on the wall around Xian. She said we could do that on the morning we were to leave. However, there really wasn’t time. Had we known, we could have done it the previous night. Turns out we could also have done it on an electric cart, but she didn’t bother to tell us.

Exodus travels was very professional. Guide and services very good. They need to update their trip notes for the Pantanal trip though. The first part of the trip to the houseboat is by boat not over a rough road as stated in the trip notes. Excellent wildlife trip in Brazil.
