Description

Situated in the southern reaches of Africa, Botswana is renowned for its pristine wilderness areas characterised by deep lagoons, wetlands, lush palms, rugged hills and desert plains scattered with scrubland. The country’s primary tourist drawcard is undoubtedly the vast red expanse of the Kalahari Desert and its remarkably beautiful Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. These natural wonders provide a tranquil haven for an abundance of African wildlife to thrive. Other highlights include the impressive Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, where visitors are privy to massive zebra migrations during the flood season; the Savuti plains, which host large prides of lions; and the Tsodilo Hills, where 4500 rock paintings form a unique record of human settlement over many millennia. This vast country is undoubtedly one of the most culturally and geographically diverse places on earth. Fondly known by locals as the 'Rainbow Nation', South Africa has 11 official languages and its multicultural inhabitants are influenced by a fascinating mix of cultures. Discover the gourmet restaurants, impressive art scene, vibrant nightlife and beautiful beaches of Cape Town; enjoy a local braai (barbecue) in the Soweto township; browse the bustling Indian markets in Durban; or sample some of the world’s finest wines at the myriad wine estates dotting the Cape Winelands. Some historical attractions to explore include the Zululand battlefields of KwaZulu-Natal, the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and Robben Island, just off the coast of Cape Town. Above all else, its remarkably untamed wilderness with its astonishing range of wildlife roaming freely across massive unfenced game reserves such as the world-famous Kruger National Park. With all of this variety on offer, it is little wonder that South Africa has fast become Africa’s most popular tourist destination. Situated on the east coast of Africa, this tropical paradise is blessed with 2500 kilometres of spectacular coastline. With its idyllic beaches fringed with palm trees and lapped by crystal-clear waters brimming with a dazzling array of marine life, this enchanting African nation is an ideal adventure holiday destination, with an abundance of activities on offer such as snorkelling, sunset cruises, horse-riding, dolphin tours and world-renowned scuba diving. Mozambique’s two major centres, Maputo and Inhambane, offer an exotic kaleidoscope of art, music and delicious local food as well as a lively nightlife scene. Spend your days immersing yourself in the fascinating local culture, marvelling at the impressive colonial architecture and interacting with the fabulously friendly local inhabitants. Those seeking a more remote getaway can head for the isolated beaches of Benguerra Island; the historic Portuguese and Muslim architecture of Mozambique Island; or the outstanding wildlife of Gorongosa National Park. However, you choose to spend your time in this exceptionally scenic destination you are likely to leave with a heavy heart and a burning desire to return time and time again.

Trip Itinerary

DAY #1 - Okavango Delta, Botswana
Upon arrival at Maun Airport and after clearing customs and immigration, you will be met and assisted by a Wilderness Safaris representative to your light aircraft for your onward Wilderness Air circuit air transfer to Chitabe.

Note that there are stops en-route which may require changing aircraft and times for the shuttle transfer will only be determined on the day. The number of passengers carried on each leg of our circuit flights is dependent on aircraft used, time of year, passenger and luggage weights, routing, fuel required, etc.

Chitabe’s location places it at the heart of a complex and beautiful mosaic of habitats, and this diversity results in Chitabe being one of the most storied of all Botswana’s areas. Experienced, passionate guides are inspired by the intricate and dynamic landscapes to deliver wildlife experiences few other locations can match.

Eight elevated, Meru-style guest tents provide the perfect human habitat, while a stroll along the elevated walkways connecting them to the main area is a safari experience in itself. Day and night drives and guided walks showcase the varied wildlife and landscapes of the Okavango margins.

INSIDER’S TIP: Learn more about the wild dog packs of the area; if you’re lucky you’ll see some of these endangered carnivores.
DAY #2 - Okavango Delta, Botswana
Game drives reveal the rich wildlife of the area from predators to prey. Our open 4×4 vehicles accommodate a maximum of seven guests allowing each a ‘window’ seat.

Kwetsani offers the perfect Okavango ‘combination’ experience. Its extremely remote location gives access to both water and dry land areas, allowing guests to see all aspects of the Delta’s makeup. Unique “tree house” style tents provide exceptional views from their elevated positions, looking out over floodplains dotted with game.

INSIDER’S TIP: Lie back on the loungers at the pool on a sunny afternoon while looking out for wildlife and “Delta Specials” or enjoy sightings from the comfort of your private room.

DAY #7 - Linyanti, Botswana
Whether experienced in a dry, wet or transitional phase, the area has always been renowned for its game viewing. It holds a magnetic attraction for elephants, amongst other plains game and predators. The Wilderness Safari camps were excellent, each offering unique attributes. Staff at Qorokwe, Little Vumbura and Kings Pool were outstanding and service was impeccable. Customer service employees in the United States could learn a lot from the Wilderness Safari staffs in Botswana.
